Arms and military expenditure 2018-03-19 · SIPRI’s own fact sheet tells us many of the key points, so I will just elaborate on a few. First of all, the trend continues to be up. SIPRI compares the most recent five years, from 2013-2017, with the previous five, 2008-2012, for its 10% headline growth figure, but this does not tell us that much, as the figures for 2013-2016 were already high enough to all but guarantee an increase. SIPRI has built its reputation and standing on competence, professional skills, and the collection of hard data and precise facts, rendering accessible impartial information on weapon developments, arms transfers and production, military expenditure, as well as on arms limitations, reductions and disarmament. The SIPRI Arms Industry Database, which presents a more detailed data set for the years 2002–18, is available on SIPRI’s website. This is the first of three major data launches in the lead-up to the publication of SIPRI’s flagship publication in mid-2020, the annual SIPRI Yearbook.
